Our Impact

Families and Caregivers of youth born with disabilities or acquired disabilities in poverty are being provided with resources, information, advocacy support, and training. Caregiver Day is being promoted throughout metro Atlanta.

Youth are being provided with resources, information, training, advocacy, and arts innovation such as crafts, local TV production, and community plays. The first performance of the play “Nothing Is Impossible” was performed in 2018 by disabled youth, their parents and caregivers.

Promoting disability inclusion information, resources, services, and support into the community through church environments locally and nationally. Day of Inclusion activities now exist in some schools, churches, and businesses.

Disability information, resources, and advocacy to local, state, and national government agencies, other non-profit organizations, and private entities. Changes have been implemented that cover a range of issues from curb cuts and accessible low-income housing to education.

Department in partnership with DIA
One of DIA’s education and advocacy visions became a reality in 2019. DeKalb County Schools Exceptional Education Department in partnership with DIA, lead a field trip to University of Georgia Athens Richard B. Russel Library Disability Archives. DIA is honored to be the first African American disability nonprofit organization asked to donate its history to UGA. We are humbled and thankful to have had the opportunity to expose students with disabilities to the accomplishments of former students with disabilities from the public school system who worked to bring about positive change for themselves and society. Disabled In Action hopes the visiting students were sparked with a perpetual desire to achieve beyond human comprehension.

STATISTICS
1 out of 33 children are born with a disability in the U.S according to CDC report 1978 through 2005
· The CDC’s new report July 30, 2015 has 53 million adults in the US with a disability. This makes up 22% of the overall population with mobility disability being 13%.
· 3 in 10 non-Hispanic blacks have a disability.
· 1 in 4 women have a disability.
The 2014 American Community Survey (ACS) shows a data summary of non-institutionalized people using the prevalence of disability in Georgia was 12.4% for persons of all ages. The stats breakdown to:
· 0.8% ages 4 and under
· 4.6% ages 5 to 15
· 5.2% ages 16 to 20
· 11.5% ages 21 to 64
· 28.7% ages 65 to 74
· 52.4 % ages 75+
The disability types are

THE DIA'S APPEAL TO ALL CHURCHES
SPIRITUAL REALIGNMENT OUTREACH AND IN REACH MINISTRY

The Institute for Development of Freedom of Information reported in May 2015 “About 15% of the world’s population lives with some form of disability. People with disabilities are one of the largest minority groups that remain dearth of attention alongside with discrimination by state and society.”
IT IS NOW THE FAITH BASED COMMUNITY’S RESPONSIBILITY TO RECTIFY THIS DISCRIMINATION.
Unfortunately, most faith-based institutions are not accessible for disabled potential members, nor is the pulpit accessible to the disabled who desire to minister. Also, spiritual counseling is needed by the disabled, their families and caregivers. Disabled In Action, Inc. can present a special showing of the DVD “Moving from the Traditional Church to an Inclusive Church” to your congregation to help you kick off your participation in the Spiritual Realignment Outreach and In-Reach Ministry.
The ministry will provide:
1. Sensitivity from the pulpit that raises awareness to the overlooked struggles of members and community who choose the responsibility of caring for a love one with a disability.
2. Encourage the institution of Caregivers Day every third Sunday of the month.
3. Establish a Caregivers Relief Auxiliary during every worship service.
4. Establish a Social Resource Guidebook for family who are seeking assistance for love ones.
5. Encourage all faith-based auxiliaries to encourage people with disabilities to join.
6. Provide examples such as Greater Piney Grove Baptist Church and Cornerstone Baptist Church work in developing the DIA's Appeal to all Churches Spiritual Realignment Outreach and Inreach Ministry.
